How to pair fonts without overthinking it

A font pairing gives two families different jobs. Begin with a headline face and a body face, then test them with the content you actually need to publish.

Try a useful starting pair

DM Serif Display with DM Sans balances expressive headlines and neutral copy. Playfair Display with Manrope feels editorial. Oswald with Inter works for direct service messaging. Fraunces with Outfit gives food and lifestyle brands a softer voice.

Create a clear hierarchy

Make the heading visibly different through size and weight. Use the body font for descriptions, navigation, forms, and other practical text. If two fonts are very similar, a single family with several weights may be cleaner.

Test words, not just an alphabet

Use your business name, a realistic headline, a paragraph, a price, and a phone number. Check accent support where needed. A beautiful sample can still be a poor match for your content.

Know what the download includes

A variable font can provide several weights from one file. Other families use separate files for regular, bold, and italic styles. Read the font page and retain the license supplied in the download.
